Since its establishment by Guido Graf Henckel Fürst von Donnersmarck in 1916, the Fürst Donnersmarck Foundation has advocated the interests of people with disabilities. To do this, the Foundation develops innovative offerings for and with people with disabilities and sees itself as a partner and an engine on the road towards an inclusive society.
The Purpose and Duties of the Fürst Donnersmarck Foundation
The Foundation’s statutes define the Foundation’s purpose as:
- The rehabilitation, care, support and advancement of people with physical and multiple disabilities*.
- The advancement and support of research work in the field of caring for people with physical and multiple disabilities.
(* The Foundation does not fund the purchase of private vehicles suitable for people with disabilities.)
This Foundation purpose is realised by:
- Building, extending and maintaining children’s homes, young people’s homes, care homes, residential homes, rest homes, community centres, training centres and flats,
- Welfare payments
- Financial and other support for people with physical and multiple disabilities,
- Carrying out and funding all measures suitable for serving the purpose of the Foundation.
The Foundation aspires to cooperation with other charitable and academic facilities working in similar fields.
The Foundation exclusively and directly pursues charitable and benevolent purposes within the meaning of the Section “Tax-Privileged Purposes” of the German Tax Code [Abgabenordnung (AO 1977)] and the purposes of charitable organisations according to Articles 66 AO 1977.
The Foundation is non-profit making; it is not primarily concerned with its own economic goals.
In practice, the Foundation’s purpose is realised in the various fields of work of the Fürst Donnersmarck Foundation and its subsidiaries and participating interests.
The Fields of Work of the Fürst Donnersmarck Foundation
The central foundation and statute purpose of the Fürst Donnersmarck Foundation is the “Rehabilitation, Care, Support and Advancement” of people with disabilities and the “Advancement and Support of Research Work in the Field”. We implement this statute purpose in the following fields of work in practice:

- Leisure, Education & Advice
- Tourism
In addition, various subsidiary companies and participating interests are part of the Fürst Donnersmarck Foundation.
Fürst Donnersmarck Foundation Property Management
FDS Gewerbebetriebsgesellschaft mbH – also called FDS Hausverwaltung (Property Management) – is a 100 per cent subsidiary of the Fürst Donnersmarck Foundation. It manages the Foundation’s property assets in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and other towns and cities in Germany and the property of other private and institutional owners.
In addition, the Repair Van also belongs to FDS Property Management. This is the Foundation’s own inclusive workshop to repair the Foundation’s real estate in Berlin.

FDS Hotel gGmbH
FDS Hotel gGmbH is the second subsidiary of the Fürst Donnersmarck Foundation. It operates the Seehotel Rheinsberg with more than 100 accessible rooms and the Heidehotel Bad Bevensen. The Seehotel is located right on the picturesque Lake Grienerick in the heart of the town of Rheinsberg in Brandenburg. The Heidehotel is on the Lüneburg Heath in the beautiful spa resort of Bad Bevensen.

Service Gesellschaft am Grienericksee
The Fürst Donnersmarck Foundation’s Service Gesellschaft am Grienericksee leases the Café Tucholsky with two holiday apartments right on the banks of Lake Grienerick.
Participating Interests of the Fürst Donnersmarck Foundation
Together with Lebenshilfe Oberhavel Süd, the Fürst Donnersmarck Foundation operates a subsidiary, Nordbahn gGmbH. This workshop for people with disabilities is active in the activities of carpentry and furniture making, printing, assembly and packaging, textiles, ceramics and the funding and employment sector.
In addition, the Foundation has a participating interest in the Berliner Werkstätten für Menschen mit Behinderung [Berlin Workshops for People with Disabilities].
